Digital Destinations Award: the Italian destinations most valued by tourists

At the TTG Travel Experience, the most important B2B tourism fair in Italy, the award ceremony of Italia Destinazione Digitale, the Oscar for Italian tourism destinations awarded by The Data Appeal Company, an Almawave Group company, was held today.

The award, conceived in 2016 and now in its 7th edition, is based on the monitoring and analysis of Big Data collected in the period between September 1, 2021 and August 31, 2022 by Artificial Intelligence technologies developed by The Data Appeal Company, and is awarded to the Italian regions and tourist destinations that have recorded the best online performance and have distinguished themselves in the eyes of tourists and visitors in terms of online perception of the offer and quality of hospitality, services and experience. We are talking about 33 million digital traces, which have allowed to monitor and examine as many as 770 thousand points of tourist, historical and cultural interest as well as accommodation facilities, such as hotels, clubs and restaurants in the country.

The goal of the award is to give back to the individual regional territories a concrete result on their tourism offerings and at the same time give an unprecedented reading of tourism in Italy, starting from those who visit and live those territories.

This year’s edition awarded a total of 8 prizes, enriching it with a number of special awards, reflecting issues at the center of the international debate, such as tourism sustainability, inclusiveness and digital innovation.

The Oscar for the Italian Tourist Destination preferred by tourists, thus with the best online reputation, goes to Val di Sole in Trentino, a region – the latter – that had won the same award last year.

The favorite destination for foreigners vacationing in Italy is the beautiful village of San Gimignano in Tuscany, while the one that Italians vacationing in Europe crowned as the most popular is the Aegean Islands in Greece.

To San Daniele del Friuli, the home of the world-famous prosciutto of the same name, goes the award for the best food and wine offer.

Campania, which won recognition as the best region for anti-Covid actions in 2021, wins this year’s Oscar for the destination with the highest Sustainability Index, awarded to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.

The destination with the highest average Inclusivity Index is Milan in Lombardy, and the destination receiving the Aree Interne award (the Italian inland area that has improved its reputation the most in the past 12 months) is the Mercure Alto Sinni Valsarmento in Basilicata.

Finally, Puglia won the special Almawave award for Digital Innovation as the area that has best interpreted digital innovation in tourism.

The awards were presented this afternoon, in the presence of representatives of the award-winning destinations, during a ceremony at the Global Village Arena in Rimini.
