Making every drop count: leveraging AI for water consumption management

For countries and organizations alike, sustainability is no longer a question of if, but of how — as industries and governments can no longer postpone the critical task of integrating sustainability into their core operations and long-term strategies.

  • According to UNESCO, 1.4 billion people were affected by droughts in 2002–2021, while there were US$832 billion in economic losses caused by floods in the same timeframe. 
  • According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population and threatening roughly half of global GDP (US$44 trillion). 
  • A 2022 UN climate report concludes that the number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000, and that without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050.
  • Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.


Similarly, this year’s World Environment Day campaign, celebrated on June 5, highlights the importance of land restoration, combating desertification, and building drought resilience.

With the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration,” it underscores the urgency and significance of addressing these critical issues.
